Located centrally in Yakima, the existing 9-hole Westwood Golf Course was in need of a new clubhouse and driving range as part of a refresh for the entire course. Set in the open, semi-arid landscape of central Washington—known for wineries and fruit trees—the new facilities are designed as a minimalist nod to agrarian structures.

Essentially a long bar-shaped building, the new 12,000 square-foot combination clubhouse and driving range is a two-story structure made of cast-in-place, board-formed concrete and mass timber. A 4,000-square-foot clubhouse, located on the east end of the building, includes a pro shop and a bar and restaurant on the ground floor. Outdoor patio seating features a walk-up window with beer service overlooking the first tee. A multipurpose banquet room is situated above the pro shop. Twenty-eight driving range stations are spread across the two levels (at grade and on a second level). The second floor features a small bar serving both banquet room and outdoor terrace opens onto upper level driving range via a glazed garage door. The second level is primarily accessed via a gracious ramp integrated into the landscape.

The building’s roof structure and second floor are built using glue-laminated timber (GLT) supported by a combination of steel and glulam beams.  The roof is standing seam metal. Corrugated and perforated Cor-ten screening wraps selected areas of the exterior to provide sun shading.
