Location: International District - Seattle, Washington
The Publix is an extensive preservation and new construction project in Seattle's International District / Chinatown. The historic Publix Hotel, a former 6-story single occupant hotel built in 1928, will be renovated to preserve the history and character of its existing spaces. Adjacent to the hotel, a new building will be built to provide in total 120 new market rate apartments and 12,000 SF of street level retail space to the community. Graham Baba Architects was brought on as a consultant to the project with design ownership of the commercial and ground floor spaces. These spaces were developed with the concept of two alleys, drawing people through the block and converging at a central exterior courtyard. Seemingly two very different projects, both strive to preserve and enhance the rich history and character of the neighborhood, ensuring its longevity. Completion is expected Spring of 2016.
