Main Street downtown Yakima was looking for a revitalization, which is just what the new Cowiche Canyon Kitchen and Icehouse Bar is providing. The project goal was to create an elegant yet approachable space with an open dining room and kitchen to exhibit the craft of cooking. The building is designed to be open and accessible from three sides. It provides outdoor dining and gathering spaces on the north, west and south sides adjacent to the sidewalks; these facades are also fully glazed broadcasting the activity within the restaurant out to the streets.
The materiality of the project, from board formed concrete walls to the wood and steel structure, recall the agricultural vernacular of the valley and are put on display along with the preparation of food. The architecture and food both aim to reset expectations for design and cuisine in a downtown area that is on the verge of an economic and cultural revitalization.
